Hello, you may have asked yourself the question “What Is Website On-Page SEO Anyway?”
This is a great question to ask.
If you want to be successful on the internet, you need to get your head around what exactly SEO is. Luckily for us, it isn’t really that hard after all. So to answer the question “What Is On Page SEO For A Website Anyway?”, let’s just jump straight into it.
SEO stands for Search Engine Optimization. It is the process of getting traffic based on “free”, “organic”, “editorial” or “natural” search results via a search engine (like Google or BING / Yahoo).

The theory goes that the closer you are to Position 1 and Page 1 of a major search engine like Google or Bing or Yahoo, then the more “free” or “organic” traffic (website visitors) you will have.
If I did a search on the keyword “chopsticks” in Google, then my Search Engine results would look like this.
I think it’s pretty obvious that because it is free, EVERYONE wants to be on Page 1, Position 1 of Google or Yahoo/Bing’s search results. This is the spot that gets the most clicks (traffic or website visitors) AND of course the best bit is that it’s FREE. The basics of on-page SEO are so simple that its definitely something that even new comers with their very first website can control!
There are two types of Search Engine Optimization
1) The first you CAN CONTROL. This part is called “On Page SEO” or On- Page Search Engine Optimization.
2) The second you CAN NOT CONTROL. This is the actual Search Engine Algorithm (eg Google Algorithm or BING / Yahoo Algorithm). This complex search algorithm (formula) is known only to Google or Bing/Yahoo and changes every few months. Because of this, it’s too complex for a beginner to understand, so it’s best to just let all major search engines worry about their search result algorithm for now.
OK, so let’s get back to the first one that you CAN CONTROL – On-Page Search Engine Optimization (or On-Page SEO) and the super short version is just called SEO).
There are some very simple steps to having great on-page SEO.
1) You must create a website.
Why? SEO is constantly changing. You need to have a website so you can tweak what you do with current Search Engine Best practice. It’s not enough to “know” about SEO, you must “DO SEO”.
28% of websites on the Web use WordPress as the basis of their website (source WordPress.com). WordPress offers many free websites themes which will have you up and running easily. Alternatively, you are welcome to create a free WordPress based website which is hosted at Wealthy Affiliate. Please click here to claim your free website with free hosting via Wealthy Affiliate.
Step 2) Select a topic to write about for your page or post.
Let’s pretend that my website is focussed on food (Industry category name), and I specialise in different eating utensils (niche). So my website might be called “bestfoodutensiles.com”.
I might want to write a page or post on Chopsticks (nice topic). In this example I will write a “Post”.
Now I need to select a Title or Heading for my Post. The Heading or Title of a post is really the “advertisement” for that post. It needs to sum up what the post is about AND give the reader an enticing reason to read on.
So my first idea is to write a post with the heading “How to use chopsticks”. Now as a complete beginner, I could just write the blog as it is.
It would be a wonderful achievement to simple get my first blog post published and YES, I would be very proud of myself.
Now if I wanted to go one step further, then I could select my heading based on SEO KEYWORDS (or Search Engine Optimization based on Keywords).
Website Keywords are defined as the ACTUAL words that someone keys into the search field at Google or BING / Yahoo.
- New Blogger tip – If the inspiration hits you straight away and you want to start blogging, it’s OK to write out your blog in MS-Word or something similar to start with. You can transfer it later as a straight “cut and paste” directly onto a website post or page when you get that set up.
3) Add a SEO plug-in for your website.
The top two FREE SEO application plug-ins to help with your website are called All-in-One SEO and Yoast.
All-in-one SEO by Michael Torbert version 4.8.1 is highly recommended by many webmasters. It helps with Out-of-the-box SEO for your WordPress blog. Features like XML Sitemaps, SEO for custom post types, SEO for blogs or business sites, SEO for ecommerce sites, and much more. More than 30 million downloads since 2007.
- New Blogger Tip – You don’t need to know all the technical words that I just used in the sentence above. It’s enough to know that someone else has figured them out and has pre-done all the fancy computer programing for you, so you don’t have to worry. This is the one I am currently using on this website.
Yoast All In one SEO by Joost version 5.3.2. This one is highly recommended by many webmasters.
Yoast SEO for WordPress plugin or “Yoast” for short. Yoast is fantastic for really focussing on Keyword Optimization. This helps gets improved Google Rankings quicker than you would have gotten otherwise. Yoast is also really good for helping you with your Meta Title and Meta Links. It is an excellent on-page SEO helper.
- New Blogger Tip – again, just like All-in-one SEO, you don’t need to know all the fancy words I just used in the sentence above. It’s enough to know these things are taken care of for you.
Please note: Both of these applications offer EXCELLENT On-page SEO assistance. You only need ONE SEO plug-in. If you download both of them you run the risk of having “Conflict errors” which will bother your website. Another issue with selecting both options is that if you have too many plug-in’s running on website, you run the risk of your website loading very slowing and this will force visitors to leave your site before it it loaded.
As a result of this – please just pick one and you will be fine.
As a beginner, the most important thing to know is that either All-In-One SEO or Yoast will be working in the background to communicate with Google and Bing / Yahoo or any other search engine on your behalf, so that your website can be known by the big, powerful search engines (we call this being “indexed”) and that your audience can find you quicker. At this stage, please just trust that the technical stuff is being taken care of.
Go to the SEO plug in that you chose. In this example I will continue to say how it is done for All-in-one SEO.

For this one, you log into your WordPress Website
Then click on Dashboard < Posts < Add New For a detailed step by step video tutorial looking at how to launch your first Post. Please click here.
Now that your Post is open. We can now go about selecting the top 7 things you can do to enhance your “on-page SEO”.
The steps that I use to optimise my on-page SEO are
- A) Pick A Keyword To Use
- B) Use that keyword in the Post Title (post heading) of your post.
- C) Use that Keyword in the body copy (main text) of your post.
- D) Use the keyword in the Meta Title (insert graphic).
- E) Meta Description (155 characters, will be shortened if you have rating stars).
- F) Insert a graphic (picture) some where in your post. Including filling out the Alternative Text Field.
- G) Internal Links.
- I) Embedding Video. (optional)
I will now go through all of these steps in more detail in the section below.
A) Pick a keyword to use.
If you are an absolute beginner, please just start with a heading of your choice and start typing. I will write a post shortly regarding choosing wonderful Keywords to use in your title. Right now, honestly, the best thing you can do is to make a start, you can made any edits / corrections later on.
B) Use that keyword in the Post Title (post heading) of your post. (for a reminder on how to create a post, please see step 4)
C) Use that Keyword in the body copy (main text) of your post.
For the start of my Posts, I like to use Heading 3 as the size of the first line.
Please include the keyword in the opening paragraph somewhere if you can. Please add it a minimal of once ANYWHERE in your body copy (main text).
Hint for new people: Please don’t feel obligated to overuse your keyword. Back in the early days of the internet, people thought they had to use their keyword x20 or x50 or x100 times (often referred to as “Keyword Stuffing”). We used to think this was important, but we really just ended up with a whole lot of really weird sentences and paragraphs that just annoyed your audience (viewer) and so they left your website because they didn’t like your writing style. So just use it in the first paragraph and then ideally in the body copy and then just write naturally as if you were having a normal conversation with someone.
D) Use the keyword in the Meta Title (SEO title box) and Meta Descriptions (In the SEO description box).
D) The Meta Title is found in the “title” field of the SEO box. This is the title that viewers will see when they do a Google Search. It is roughly 60 characters long)
E) Meta Description is found in the Description Box. It is roughly 155 characters (depending on theme or SEO assistant), will be shortened if you have rating stars.
F) Insert a graphic (picture) some where in your post. Please also fill in the “Alternative Tag” description box to help your audience. For a detailed step by step video on how to do this, please click on this link.
- Please note: The first part is about finding quality graphics and at around the 13 minute mark is where you will find step by step instructions on how to insert media immediately into the post.
G) Internal Links.
An Internal link is simply a link on post/page #1 that the viewer can click on to go to post/page #2. The important thing to remember here is that the viewer DOES NOT LEAVE YOUR WEBSITE.
A very simple example of this would be to write a post on my topic (eg Chopsticks) and then say, “If you have any further questions regarding Chopsticks, please don’t hesitate to email us. Details are on our contact us page, which you can easily reach by clicking here.
For a detailed explanation of how to insert internal links, please click here.
H) External Links.
External links are links that take the viewer away from your site and onto website #2. An example would be to use an industry keyword eg “chopsticks” and then do a Wikipedia search on the word “Chopsticks” and then make “chopsticks” on your post hyperlink to “chopsticks” on Wikipedia.
When you are inserting external links onto your page / post, you can click a “tick box” to have this second website open in a new tab. I always click this box, that way my website stays open and my audience can continue looking at my website.
For a different explanation regarding the difference between Internal Links / External Link and Backlinks, please click here
All of these steps are quite straight forward to do and should be used on every page / post.
I am writing this post in the year 2017 and YouTube videos are growing and growing, and growing in popularity. As such it is estimated that more and more videos will have embedded video content moving forward.
As such, I have listed it here as an optional Step 9. Obviously not all topics (niches) are suitable for video, but if you are lucky enough to have a niche that is, then you should include video where possible.
I) Embedding Video. (optional)
Here you would go to YouTube, do a keyword search on the topic (keyword) of your choice. Select a video that you like. Go to embed video and then insert it into your website.
For a detailed step by step video on how to do this, please click this link.
