Like any business owner, I am sure that you lots and lots of ideas rolling around in your head and then one day when you finally launched your website and it because real you sat back and admired it and then thought “now what?”

The next step in your website journey is actually getting more and more visitors (traffic) to come to your website.

If you are like most people I know, funds could be quite limited. So then you have to ask “How do I get quality FREE website visitors?”

The answer is by appearing really high up in the Search Engine Results Pages (SERP) and in a perfect world, you would appear on Page 1 of Google and in an even more perfect world, you would appear in the top 5 results pages.

So now that I know that I want to happen, how do I make this happen FOR FREE?

OK, you have come to the right place so here are my top tips for improving your website rankings.

How To Improve Your Website Rankings

Idea #1 Schedule your FRESH new content postings.

Fresh content is one of the keys to website successOnce upon a time the internet was full of websites that were created by their owners and then “abandoned” when a new idea came along. This left the internet with lots of old, outdated and “stale” websites.

This lead to a drop in “happiness” and “quality scores” of the search result pages. So the major Search Engines fought back and started rewarding business owners that looked after and maintained their website with better Search Engine Results pages ranking.

It didn’t take long for business owners to realize that sites with fresh content were out ranking the more established outdated sites.

So my #1 idea to make sure that your website is up to date and full of fresh content and establish a scheduling routine and try to stick with it.

If your business is still a baby – and the “team” is really just you, then it can be a real challenge to have fresh content everyday. So take a moment and review your boundaries and other commitments. Perhaps it’s impossible to do fresh content EVERY DAY and if so, then that’s ok. Just acknowledge this upfront and then think about what is realistic to achieve. Perhaps two (2) posts per week is more reasonable in the beginning when the business is still in the start up phase, and then possibly drop it back when the business is more established.

Idea #2 Tell The Search Engines How Often you Plan on Updating Fresh Content.

This is an often overlooked idea which is really, really simple to do.

All you have to do is decide how often you plan on posting fresh content AND THEN STICK TO IT. This is called a “Content Posting Schedule”.

All you have to do is install one of the industry leading FREE SEO (search engine optimization) plug-ins that are easy to install onto your WordPress website and you will be able to communicate with the major search engines easily.

I have written a review of the major two industry plug-ins – All-In-One SEO and Yoast, you can read my review here.

This website uses All-In-One SEO, then XML Sitemap, then Schedule Updates.

WordPress can schedule the frequency of GoogleBot Searches using All-in-one SEO

Then how often you want to update the website.

The advantage of using this option is that when the major Search Engine Spiderbot comes and crawls / updates changes on your website they know how often they should visit and they can come, do what they have to and then come back when you tell them to come back.

As the internet gets bigger and bigger this feature of requesting when these major bot return will prove to be a real time saver for getting your website ranked faster. In Google’s case this is called a “GoogleBot” and you want this bot to crawl your site for new information as often as possible.

Idea #3 Pick a consistent day of the week to Post on

A top tip to improve your rankings is to schedule new posts

Schedule, Source Pixabay, Darkmoon1968

Lets say that your business is still mostly just you. That’s OK we all have to start somewhere.

By picking a definite day of the week to add fresh content to main benefits are that

1) You will discipline yourself to post fresh content every day ie By Close of Business Friday, I will post a fresh article.

2) Major Search Engine crawlers (like “GoogleBot’s”) will know that if they come to your site Friday @ midnight there is a wonderful chance of finding fresh content. ALL Major search engines reward website owners that continuously have fresh content.

3) This will increase your chances of repeat website visitors. By letting your audience (website traffic) know to expect new content every Friday, then know if they come to your website on Saturday, then they will find relevant, fresh content on a topic that they really care about.

4) It will help you build an email list faster. I am sure you have visited many websites that have a “pop up” jump up and say “join our newsletter” or “sign up and we will send you our latest posts”.  As a website owner this is a good thing to do. For your audience it is also wonderful to know when to expect updates, it will build your relationship with your audience and help you build your brand.

5) By picking a day of the week to post on, after a period of time you can look back and see how your website is now FULL of content and is now shaping up as an authority site in your chosen niche.

For example if you post x2 per week after 3 months you have 24 articles. Now if your articles were all 1,000 words long, then you have 24,000 words on your chosen topic – WOW! That is amazing and something that you never thought would happen.

If you post x3 per week over 3 months, you now have 36 articles @ 1,000 words or 36,000 words on your topic. Wow you are now well and truly on your way to establishing your website as an authority site in your chosen niche.

Bonus Idea #4 Add images or video onto your content

Emotional images can help the reader stay on your page longer

Emotional images can help the reader stay on your page longer

By adding images or video content onto your website your blog article will now be more visually appealing to your audience and this will hopefully encourage them to stay on your page longer, read more of your content and maybe even leave a comment or a suggestion at the bottom of your blog post.

If you are selling products or services directly from your website, it may also encourage them to do the #1 thing that you want them to do – actually buy the product (yeah!!).
YouTube Videos can add your User Experience
Pictures add to the visual story of your content. You should aim for a picture every 100 – 200 words.

If you need instructions on how to upload a video, please click here.

If your product is quite technical or if you are explaining something the audience may not have seen before, please add a video explaining how to use the product. Often the manufacturer will have already created this content. If so, then you can simply embed the video from places like YouTube pretty easily.

  1. Great article, Glenys.
Yes, as a website owner you need to do as much as you can to ensure that ‘your voice’ is heard. It will not be easy but if you have a schedule and you are consistent – this can move mountains. The trick is to not overwhelm yourself – pace yourself at a pace that you can manage. You do not want o to overwhelm yourself or get burnout before you even start.
Thanks for the tips and much success.

    1. HI Michelle,
Thank you for dropping by today and sharing some of your knowledge and experience with us. I really appreciate that. I agree with you that as a website owner you need to pace yourself. This is especially true when you first start out and you feel that everything is really hard and you don’t know what you should learn next. The horrible feeling of being overwhelmed can set in.

  2. Excellent article which made me think about my own website. From your article I have realized that I need to be more consistent in writing posts and keeping my website ‘fresh.’

I would agree that the amount of good, quality content goes a long way with the search engines and will definitely improve your ranking within the search engines.

Other than the tips you provided with fresh content, and choosing a day of the week to do this, what other sources do you recommend in driving traffic to your site?
    Social Media? Discussion Groups?

Thank you for this very informative article and I look forward to your response!

    1. Hi Luke,

Thank you for stopping by. I think this is your first time visiting our website.  Thank you also for your positive feedback, it means a lot to me.  I am really happy to share my knowledge of websites and marketing with people.

You sound like you already have a website up and running – a massive congratulations to you for doing that.

You are right, traffic is a HUGE permanent, on-going issue that will always, always, always be at the front of mind for any website owner who is serious about building a quality, sustainable online business.

Simply put just like in the real world, if we don’t have “foot traffic” coming into your store, then your business will close.  In the on-line world, if you don’t have “website traffic” coming into the store, then your business will close.  It is as simple as that.

At the moment my top sources of organic (free) website visitors are from Google and Social media accounts.  Thank you for the suggestion that I should do a post on how to attract more website visitors. I think that lots of my readers would really appreciate this information.

  3. Hi Happy; I have read through your post and I found it helpful. I really never thought about posting on a specific day of the week.

But because I realize that regular posting attracts High Rankings I post once or twice each week.

Would you say that I am doing something wrong the way I post?

I often write the post and save them in draft then when I have enough credit I publish two or three post all at once.

    1. Hi Dorcas thank you for stopping by, I really appreciate that.

Don’t worry, many people have not really thought about a specific posting schedule that works for them.

I did not do this myself for several years. Then one day a very experienced blogger said that I should do it and I did….and you know what?  My traffic started lifting and I fixed up my sitemap and woosh!! Just like that my traffic started to grow organically.

I hope that you get the same positive result on your website.

I am not sure what you mean about “enough credit” and posting.  Would you mind clarifying that for me please? I haven’t heard of that before.

You should be able to post things on your website whenever you are ready.

  4. Hey Glenys:

Thanks for this informative post. I like the idea of “telling” the little bots when they should come to visit your site.

Like making an appointment, you’re more likely to hold to a timetable if you call it in upfront.

I also like that you emphasize consistency over quantity. Many of us are doing the blogging as a side-gig.

I used to feel guilty about not doing a post three times a week, but realistically that is still an ideal rather than an actuality.

    1. Hi Netta,

Thank you for visiting our site today. I really appreciate that.  Thank you also for your kind words of encouragement. They mean a lot to me.

Yes, I try to offer quality content when I can. I think that we all grow and learn by sharing quality information.  The internet moves so quickly that by sharing what we know we can all move ahead faster.

Yes, I like to let the GoogleBots know when to come and visit my site. I think that by writing consistent content they will return to my site and expect to see more and more quality content.

I am hoping to get ranked faster than I would have otherwise.

I agree with you that many people are doing internet marketing and growing their own online businesses as a “side-gig”.  This is a very common story.  It takes a while to get your head around what it takes to succeed as an online Entrepreneur in this digital age. I think its great that you still have your “normal job” so you can continue to pay the bills while you earn and learn.

Good on you for juggling both things really well.

  5. Thanks for the excellent tips. I actually did not know search engines would take into account set days we post on. I try to bash out a post once a week but dont really care what day it gets done.

I will definitely be choosing a day to post on regularly so search engines can visit me and rank me higher. I deserve it 🙂

    1. He he he you are right! I love it when you said “I will definitely be choosing a day to post on regularly so search engines can visit me and rank me higher. I deserve it :)”  I just couldn’t agree with you more.

  7. Going SEO is so important and in order to get to this level there are something to put in place what you have listed will help out so much as we seek to have a good ranking in the search engine.

    1. Hi Norman,

Thank you for stopping by today, I really appreciate that. You sound like you already have a website. Thank you for sharing a little of your understanding of good SEO with our audience. Together we all grow and learn.

I agree that yes, having a good ranking in the search engine will be a wonderful thing for all of our websites. Unfortunately Google continually changes their search Algorithm and just when you think you have everything sorted out…. whack! a change comes through and alters everything.

I think I will be researching ways to refine my SEO and SERP rankings for as long as I have a website business.

  8. Thanks for this awesome post about improving Google ranking. I didn’t know you can tell Google how often to crawl your site. Can you do that in Yoast? I couldn’t find anything like that in Yoast on my end.

    1. Hi Jerry and thank you for stopping by our website today. I really appreciate that.
You sound like you already have a WordPress website up and running. It also sounds like you are using Yoast to help you with your Search Engine Optimization (SEO). I also use Yoast for some of my other websites. I use All-In-One SEO for this website due to the simplicity of it all.
I am not familiar with the part of Yoast that will allow you to schedule GoogleBot updates, sorry about that.

I wish you every success with your website. Thank you again for dropping by today and sharing some of your experience with us.

  9. Love the story…Tons of help.

I am sure I am like many that are reading your article. Still learning and need help.

Your reminder and scheduling really hit me hard. Although I have been posting articles 2-3 a week as explained by you.

However, I have been a bit inconsistent when it comes to the time which you answered clearly. I hear you. This change will be made.

    Thank you for your help.

How long have you been online?

    1. Hi Robert,

Thank you for visiting us today and sharing a little bit of your experience online. We all really appreciate that.

When I first started out I was the same as you. I started posting articles 2 or 3 times per week and then I lost a bit of enthusiasm / life got in the way so I stopped for a week or 2 and then started posting again.  Being inconsistent really hurt my overall website rankings.

You can tell this easily by the drop in visitor traffic when you have a gap between fresh content postings.

Thank you for dropping by and sharing your personal story. I really appreciate that.  Good luck with your website.

  10. Very useful tips about the value of publishing posts to your blog on a regular schedule.

I especially appreciate tip #2 – I had not considered “telling” search engines about my schedule. I put a blog post out every Friday, and another one, more of a “diary” for my team, on Sundays, so I will check out this option.

After a few weeks of posting every Friday (or whenever), it becomes a habit and is easier to get done. I do sometimes miss posting on Friday, but in that case I try to get the blog post out on Saturday or Sunday and backdate it. I certainly blog more than I would if I didn’t have the habit of posting on a fixed day of the week.

    1. Hi David,

thank you for stopping by.  Thank you also for sharing your personal insights into what works for you.  I really appreciate that.  I like your idea to post every Friday. That certainly seems really achievable.

I hadn’t thought of backdating my posts before.  Thank you for sharing that idea with me.
