So You Want An Online Business, But What Niche Should You Pick?

Are you stuck picking a Niche?

Dear friend,

If you have found your way here, then you are at least curious about starting an online business but perhaps you are at least a little stuck about what niche should you pick?

I know. I had this problem when I was first starting out as well.

I had a “few ideas” for a couple of websites that I thought could be really good, but I just wasn’t sure. I was so new to this “internet thing” that I was sort of stuck.

Do you know what I mean?

It sounds a bit weird, but I knew that I wanted a website and I knew I wanted to sell things over the internet, but I just didn’t know which ones.

Which idea would be success and which ones would be a dud?

I am busy person and I didn’t want to waste my time and energy putting lots of effort into something that flat out just wouldn’t work.

So I took out a piece of paper and wrote down all my ideas for a website. And then I put my pencil down and just sat there quietly going over and over my ideas.

Top things to look for when picking a niche.

Should I start a website on cooking?

Should I start a website on health?

Should I start a website on a hobbie?

Should I start a website on mobile phones?

or perhaps should I start a new website on a topic that is “hot” right now, but I don’t actually know anything about it yet. Something like “Bitcoin” or “cryptocurrency” would fit the bill.

Hmmm…..

After all this wondering, I got really, really stuck.

All this uncertainly just really ground me to a halt. I mean, I just didn’t know which way to go and get help.

Has this ever happened to you?

I mean in this sort of problem, wouldn’t it be really great if you could bounce a few ideas off some trusted friends or a community of experts who have done this before?

I know I really appreciate brainstorming with talented, friendly people who have my best interests at heart.

The best advice I can give you is to remember what a niche really is and what this particular niche will mean to you and how you will go about transforming your website from a basic website to a growing, thriving business.

Please remember:
(1) You are going to be writing content within your niche
(2) You are going to be communicating within your niche
(3) You are going to be choosing products to promote within your niche
(4) You are going to get to help people within your niche.
(5) Your first niche PROBABLY won’t be your last (so don’t worry about it being perfect)
(6) Any SINGLE niche website can become a “full time” income/business

  1. Picking a Niche can be daunting for many that are wanting to start out online but are not sure how. I changed mine 3 times by starting over. Now I am in the routine like you mentioned about writing content. It is much easier when you have a passion for it. This is a great post and you have explained it very well. I know this will help others who read this. Thanks for the information
    Take care

    1. Hi Todd and thank you for stopping by today.  I really appreciate that.

Yes, I definitely agree that starting out in a new niche can be daunting for anyone.  No one want to make a mistake and waste either their money or their time – or worse still, both.

I am happy to hear that you tried x3 different niches before starting again with your fourth.  I think that everytime we take a step forward we are learning, growing and improving and hopefully success is only a small step away.

I am happy that #4 seems to be working out really, really, well for you.

  2. I’ve always told people to get in a niche that you’re passionate about. Don’t just think of the money. I made this decision early on in my affiliate marketing career. I’ve been doing it for 10 years now, though.

I have been involved in a bunch of different niche sites over the years. One thing I have been doing lately is doing pet niches. Amazon pays 8% on sales in the pet niche. Therefore, you can make more money with pet niches.

Always focus on creating articles that are over 1,500 words. Make them high-quality sites and you’ll never have to worry about Google attaching a manual penalty to your website.

Have been using Wealthy Affiliate for several years now. I absolutely love them!

    1. Wow! you have been doing this for 10 years! That is amazing.  Congratulations to you. It’s nice to hear success stories like yours. Many people start out in Affiliate Marketing, but then give up when the sales are less than they had hoped for or they get distracted by life and move onto something else.

I am happy that it has worked out for you for as long as it has.  I hope that it continues to be successful for you in the future.

I really value your advice regarding Pet products and the pet niche in general.  8% commission sounds great.  I know some places pay really small amounts on physical products, so 8% is getting up there.

I also really like your advice regarding creating articles which are 1500 words plus, thank you for sharing that one.

  3. Thanks for the suggestions and the tips.

In the beginning, I could not realize that there are unlimited niche ideas.

It really helps to write them down. Then, I can go with one that makes me feel good.

In your opinion, you need to know well your niche or you can go with one that you will learn in the process?

    1. Hi Ilias and thank you for stopping by.

Yes, like you when I first started out I also didn’t know that niches could be found absolutely everywhere in everyday things and also covering every topic imaginable – wow the possibilities really are endless.

I really like your idea to start writing them all down.  I can see the value in getting your ideas out of your head and onto paper (or computer). This is a really great way to get the creative juices flow.  Thank you for offering that suggestion.

I think your question regarding should you pick a topic that you know really well or not is a great one to ask.  Personally I have several websites so I cover both.  I have a topic that I know lots about already so I can write x10 blog posts to get going really quickly.  However, I also come across new topics and hobbies and interest as new things are discovered / created.  For example, I know that drones and cryptocurrencies are both very popular topics to blog about which weren’t covered to this level 2 years ago.

I think a balance of the two is a great place to start.

As you already have a website, as a thank you for stopping by, please feel free to take a look at my blog post on getting quality royalty free images for your blogs.  You can click on the link here.

  4. hi,

Yes i am very curious to get the right niche and yes your article has been really useful to me but there is something still bothering me so i want to ask, i have this idea about how i can use a topic that i really love but if i do am sure i will not get enough clients since people don’t like this kind of stuff, so what do i dooo!!?

    1. Hi Dave,

Thank you for stopping by. Yes, I too have had that thought myself.  The very first website that I created was such a tiny niche that I thought I wouldn’t make enough money out of it to make it worthwhile.  Anyway, I was so motivated with the topic that I started the website anyway.

By taking action I learnt how to embed video, add graphics create content, answer website visitor comments etc.  I got some website traffic and made a few sales (nothing amazing though).  Overall I consider the knowledge that I gained by taking action to be worth more to me that the money side of things.

That said… Now that I have built up my knowledge I can build new websites quicker and spread myself over multiple topics faster.  I can also identify how to add value to my clients.

So overall, even though my first website didn’t make much money, personally I still consider it a success.

That said, you are right of course in that money does matter.  I wrote an article before called Essential Step – Make Money Blogging  I will write a follow up article called top 10 tips for making money from any niche.

Thanks for the advice.  I think that your questions will help many other website visitors in the future.

      Thanks again.

  5. Yes, I agree that finding a niche is the most daunting task of starting to make money online. Its really hard to know which direction to take – especially if you have a lot of interests. Your advice about remembering that you are building a business – and one which is going to require you to provide significant information – is sound advice. I can see that it would also be extremely helpful to have a community of like-minded people with whom to bounce ideas around.
    Thanks for an informative article.
    Margaret
