Once you have your website up and running AND have written at least a few posts – A MASSIVE CONGRATULATIONS to you for getting this far.

The next logical step in the process is to ask yourself, so “how do I go about finding good keywords for my SEO?”

This is a great question.

So to answer your question properly, let’s look at what SEO keywords are and that will help explain why a lot of people think they are so important.

So what is a SEO keyword?

Definition of Keyword SEO by www.techopedia.com

Definition of Keyword SEO by www.techopedia.com

A SEO keyword is defined as “a particular word or phrase that describes the contents of a Web page. Keywords are intended to act as shortcuts that sum up an entire page.” source https://www.techopedia.com/def…

The search engines would take this information and then convert it into “computer speak” (using Indexing, meta title and meta description. Don’t worry about these for now, we will talk about them later as you website fills out.)

The user would come along and type in what they were looking for eg “English Rock Bands from the 1960s”. The search engines would to check the SUMMARY (index or keywords) regarding what the website post or page contained, and then return a result (search engine results page or SERP rating).

The viewer (being a real person) would select a website to look at based on the results presented.

Webmasters figured out very early on that the higher up the search engine rankings their particular website page or post ranked, then the more “free” or organic search engine traffic would come to their website.

Webmasters got very excited about that and a whole industry regarding SEO and on-page SEO optimization was born.

So how does this help you?

The most important thing to remember is that keywords are simply words related to your niche that are relevant.

So how you would apply this is, if you have decided to write a whole blog post / page regarding a topic for example 1,000 words on the Beatles during the 1960s, this would obviously take up a lot of your time. As such you would really like your article to be read by the largest target audience possible.

This is where SEO Keyword selection comes in.

If we use a keyword tool to help us, and type in “Beatles in the 1960s” we can see a list of the most popular search terms currently in use.

If we look at the search results in Jaaxy for people looking for “Beatles in the 1960s”

Here we can see a grouping of blog posts that have an ALMOST identical title.  Based on the title, you can safely assume that the content would be fairly similar as well.

The examples include:

  1.  Beatles in the 60s (no apostrophe)
  2. Beatles songs 1960s
  3. Beatles in the 1960’s (with apostrophe)
  4. Beatles 1960s (no apostrophe)
  5. Beatles 1960 (no “s” or apostrophe)
  6. Beatles 60s
  7. Beatles early years

From this selection we can see that item #3 on our list “Beatles in the 1960’s” (with apostrophe) has the largest number of people searching naturally for this term with 153 results. This is more than “Beatles in the 1960s” (no apostrophe) with 110 results.  It also represents a MASSIVE difference of (110/153)*100 = 71.89.  Wow that is a HUGE difference.

So that’s almost a 30% jump in potential website traffic just by adding or subtracting an apostrophe and the content of my blog is absolutely identical – WOW!

Once I realised this, it just made the biggest difference to my website traffic results.

As such if we wanted to help ensure that our website post was read by the largest possible number of people, then we would definitely make sure that we selected this one as our title.

So now that we know how many people are searching for our chosen topic or niche “Beatles in the 1960’s” HOW do we apply this knowledge to our business?

That is a great question to ask.

Luckily for us, the answer is that we apply this knowledge pretty easily.

You can see from the screenshot taken from above, the answers really are that easy to see and apply straight away in our business.

    1. Hi Rowena,

Thank you also for sharing your thoughts. I know that when I first started out, I didn’t know what the best keywords were. I knew what I wanted to say as a title, but I could not figure out why I had little / no traffic. Once I started using a keyword selection tool to help me with my SEO I could really see what a difference it makes to pick the right heading.
I am glad that I found Jaaxy. My organic (free) website traffic has lifted as a result.

  1. I really appreciate the information in this article, I believe it will help so much and I plan to use the training above to improve my website. I did not realize an apostrophe could make such a difference in my keywords. I have a few posts that I did not use a keyword tool on and they are not ranking well. Can I go ahead and search for a keyword and apply it to those post to make them better? Thanks for all you help on this.

    1. Hi Dena,

Thanks for stopping by today, I really appreciate that. Thank you also for sharing some of your personal experience with us, that is fantastic of you.
It’s hard to believe I know!!! Who know that basic little things like apostophes and single v plural could make such a GIANT difference to your search engine rankings, but the truth is that they can.
I am really greatful that I have access to a very powerful and FREE search engine tool in Jaaxy. If you would like access to 30 free searches to help you on your search, please click here
For your question “can I change my headings?” The answer is YES of course you can. You can’t change your URL Link (permalink) because it will break any other URL links that are pointing to your website, but you are certainly free to change heading, general text…. in fact you are free to change lots and lots of things within the body of your text. I always look at it as you are making positive changes so hopefully that means that your traffic will lift over time.
      Onwards and upwards for everyone!
      Thanks again for stopping by.

    1. Hi Emonne,

Thank you for dropping by today and also for your kind words. I really appreciate that.

I have tried to make my post as straight forward as possible so that lots of people who are new to internet marketing can understand how good keywords can help them.

When we all start out with a website we ALL want lots of free traffic. Unfortunately because EVERYBODY wants this, Google has put in place some rules around who gets to be on their top 5 results.  This is really where you need to be.  There are studies that show that the top 5 URL’s get upto 70% off all traffic.

So this is the goal that everyone needs to set for themselves and their business.

The truth is that it is easier to be on page 1 in Google than many people think.

I am glad that I was able to help you today.  Please send me a message when one of your posts ends up on Page 1 of Google. I will celebrate with you.

  4. Jaaxy is truly the BEST way to find keywords for SEO. I love the program and I am so glad you do an article on them! I was wondering what some of the advantages were for upgrading? I didn’t see any but I want to keep expanding my business, and maybe it will give me that extra bump! Thanks again :).

    1. H Ryan and thank you for stopping by today.

It sounds you like already know about Jaaxy – That is great.  I am happy to hear that Jaaxy is working for you and your online business really, really well. That is wonderful to know.

Personally I am still using the basic version of Jaaxy.  Yes, I understand that there are actually three levels that people can use, Jaaxy Lite, Laaxy Pro and Jaaxy Enterprise.

The main benefits from upgrading are around extra keyword searches, search history and competitor analysis.

Many people have made a whole career out of understanding competitor analysis and really get HEAPS out of these advanced features. Is that what you mainly use the upgrade for?

  5. Great Post!

You hand my attention at “Beatles in the 60’s”.

Your explanation of how much difference it can make with results is impressive. I had no idea it could be that much. A huge lesson presented so well.

That Jaxxy is what you must use. I am going to check that out. Very handy.

How long have you been using it and what do you like th most about it?

    Thanks so much.

    1. Hi Robert,

Thank you for stopping by.  I think this is your first time visiting our website so I want to give you and extra welcome.

I am glad that you are also a fan of the Beatles.  They really were an amazing band weren’t they?  One of my favourite songs from the 1960’s is “I want to hold your hand”.  What is yours?

Thank you for your kind words about my advice.  I am glad that you found the information helpful.  I am not sure if you have your own website or not, but if you do I hope that my advice will help take your business to the next level.

I have been using Jaaxy now for around 6 months.  What I like is just how simple the results / metrics are.  I have tried other programs before, but they came back with so, so, so, so many different results and data that I found it all really quite overwhelming.  The simplicity of the Jaaxy results page is what appeals to me. I really just want to make quick, clean decisions so I can move forward with new posts quickly…..I mean if I wanted to be a Data Analyst I would not have started a website.  Know what I mean?
