Help Choosing A Theme For Your Website
Congratulations on making the decision that you want to start your very own website. Now you have to chose a “look” or “theme” for your website. This can be a stressful hurdle for many people who are new to building websites, but don’t worry, help choosing a theme for your website is right here for you. A WordPress Website Theme is simply a pre-programmed template where a lot of the major layout and coding elements are already set for you. This makes it perfect for new people just starting out with WordPress.
The quickest way to move forward is simply to set some basic ground rules around some major decisions concerning your theme.
Please note: As my website is tailored to helping people over 50, I am going to lean more towards that audience in my answers. If you need a place to teach you how to build your own website and be your own boss, please click here.
Ok that said:
The easiest word colour or text colour / font colour to read is good old fashioned BLACK text. Our eyes are well acustomed to reading black text and we can get into an easy reading rhythym through the use of black text.
The easiest background to read is a white background. Our eyes are very comfortable picking out words on a white page.
The classic combination of black text on a white background is one that has stood the test of time for centuries.
The reader must be able to move around the website quickly and easily. Look for website themes that have spaces set up already for header menus and footer menus. This is the easiest way for you to know that you can simply insert pages or posts into these pre-allocated spots and your website visitor will find your information quickly and easily.
4) The theme layout is suitable for multiple devices
People will be reading your website information on different electronic devices. Things like desktop computer, laptops, tablets and ipads all have different screen sizes. The available screen size has an impact on how much information can be shown on the screen at any point in time and how easily it will be for your audience to move onto a second page or post on your website.
5) If this is your first website – please don’t make it to “fancy”
What I mean by that, is that some website themes have lots of “bells and whistles” and things that “flash” or go “zoom”. If this is your first website, then a good old classic, straight forward and easy to navigate theme will be hands down your #1 choice.
I recently updated my car and the car salesman was showing me all the “Fancy things” that my new car radio can do – things like satellite connectivity, road map connectivity etc…. Wow, in the showroom it really blew me away. Now that I have had the car for a while though, I can honestly say for my daily driving I still really just use the car radio in the classic format.
Your first website will be the same. Like any new skill, there is much to learn and it is your first website then focusing on the basics will really help your audience.

How to Select A Theme – Step by Step
1) Log into the back end of your website via your WordPress password
2) On the far left-hand side of the screen is your Dashboard. Follow the list of Dashboard items down until you see the paintbrush symbol with the word “Appearance” next to it.
A menu will automatically launch.
Click on the first option – “Themes”
You will now be shown a list of different WordPress themes that you can select for your website.
Your WordPress Theme choice selection menu may look different to mine, however the important thing is that you have a list of FREE theme choices that you can select from. Simply scroll down until you see something that you like.
When you see something that you like, simply hover over the theme’s tile. The “Details & Preview” shadow box will appear. You can either Preview the theme or Install it depending on where you are at in the process.
If you hit Install your new blank website and theme are prepared and are ready to go.
Please remember that each theme has a different “spot” for important visual information such as key graphics or how text flows or moves around the page. For this reason it’s important to always back up your website prior to changing your themes in-case anything happens that you don’t like.
If you would like to “play around” with a new theme, why don’t you create your own free website with free theme and have it hosted on the Wealthy Affiliate SiteRubix.com platform? If yes, please feel free to create your own website via the box listed below.
Top Tips for New Webmasters
If you have an existing website that is getting comments and traffic already, changing themes counts as a major change.
