Help Choosing A Theme For Your Website

Congratulations on making the decision that you want to start your very own website.  Now you have to chose a “look” or “theme” for your website.  This can be a stressful hurdle for many people who are new to building websites, but don’t worry, help choosing a theme for your website is right here for you. A WordPress Website Theme is simply a pre-programmed template where a lot of the major layout and coding elements are already set for you.  This makes it perfect for new people just starting out with WordPress.

The quickest way to move forward is simply to set some basic ground rules around some major decisions concerning your theme.

Please note: As my website is tailored to helping people over 50, I am going to lean more towards that audience in my answers.  If you need a place to teach you how to build your own website and be your own boss, please click here. Learn How To build a Website Here for Free

Ok that said:

Choosing a theme for your website can be a bit of a puzzle1) Text

The easiest word colour or text colour / font colour to read is good old fashioned BLACK text.  Our eyes are well acustomed to reading black text and we can get into an easy reading rhythym through the use of black text.

2) Background

The easiest background to read is a white background.  Our eyes are very comfortable picking out words on a white page.

The classic combination of black text on a white background is one that has stood the test of time for centuries.

In "My Example Website", then main menu bar has the headings "Home, About Us, Contact Us Page, Featured products page & Sample page"

In “My Example Website”, then main menu bar has the headings “Home, About Us, Contact Us Page, Featured products page & Sample page”

3) Navigation

The reader must be able to move around the website quickly and easily. Look for website themes that have spaces set up already for header menus and footer menus.  This is the easiest way for you to know that you can simply insert pages or posts into these pre-allocated spots and your website visitor will find your information quickly and easily.

Your theme needs to be compatible with the electronic device you are using4) The theme layout is suitable for multiple devices

People will be reading your website information on different electronic devices. Things like desktop computer, laptops, tablets and ipads all have different screen sizes.  The available screen size has an impact on how much information can be shown on the screen at any point in time and how easily it will be for your audience to move onto a second page or post on your website.

5) If this is your first website – please don’t make it to “fancy”

What I mean by that, is that some website themes have lots of “bells and whistles” and things that “flash” or go “zoom”.  If this is your first website, then a good old classic, straight forward and easy to navigate theme will be hands down your #1 choice.

I recently updated my car and the car salesman was showing me all the “Fancy things” that my new car radio can do – things like satellite connectivity, road map connectivity etc…. Wow, in the showroom it really blew me away.  Now that I have had the car for a while though, I can honestly say for my daily driving I still really just use the car radio in the classic format.

Your first website will be the same.  Like any new skill, there is much to learn and it is your first website then focusing on the basics will really help your audience.

Choosing the right theme can be a challengeYour WordPress Theme choice selection menu may look different to mine, however the important thing is that you have a list of FREE theme choices that you can select from.  Simply scroll down until you see something that you like.

When you see something that you like, simply hover over the theme’s tile.  The “Details & Preview” shadow box will appear.  You can either Preview the theme or Install it depending on where you are at in the process.

This is a sample theme to use

If you hit Install your new blank website and theme are prepared and are ready to go.

Please remember that each theme has a different “spot” for important visual information such as key graphics or how text flows or moves around the page. For this reason it’s important to always back up your website prior to changing your themes in-case anything happens that you don’t like.

Choosing a theme for a website is where I always struggle. I want to have the right “fit” for my site and I often spend hours just changing themes to see if I can find it. I then forget to spend time developing the content of my site because I’m frustrated I didn’t get the look I wanted. I know I spent too much time choosing my theme and I became disheartened and gave up. What I take from your post is to keep it simple and don’t over think it – something I am prone to doing.

      HI Megan,

Thank you for stopping by.  Yes, I agree with you that quite often when we are starting out we can “overthink” decisions.  We often becomes scared that our decisions are not “perfect enough”.  Unfortunately when this situation happens it slows us down or stops us from reaching our goals.

Internet marketing requires such a complex mix of skills and constantly changing technical skills that really, everyday that we are providing value to our audience and moving forward with knowledge is a GREAT DAY.

The important thing is what you correctly pointed out – “Don’t Give Up!” lets all move forward together.

You sound like you already have skills in this space, as such I am sure you are constantly on the look out for quality royalty free photo.  Please feel free to take a look at my latest post called Where To Find Free Website Pictures – 29 Awesome Sites

Just started using WordPress and looking for tips on how to pick the right theme. I have an idea of a lifestyle blog and when I started using website builders initially, I found their templates to be cluttered and not comfortable to the eyes.

Although not everything is nice, WordPress does have a huge selection and that’s an advantage. How do I search for specific themes that can suit my blog without having to go through every single one of them?

Appreciate your advice. Thank you.

Hi, great post on finding the right theme for our first website. I have had much trouble with choosing the right theme myself, although I finally have, ” I think “, see this seems to be how it goes, just when I think I have it all figured out and am happy with my chosen theme, I go to make a comment on someone’s website and I will be checking out their theme. Boom! I’m off and searching again, distracted by shiny objects. Lol I am trying to do better though, although I do like your theme:) Keep it simple….and follow your directions in this post to have the perfect theme for your first website.

HI Glenys, I have been thinking for awhile now about changing my theme, but to be honest, every time I went and looked through the thousands of themes I would get so confused and quit.
You have a great article here and has helped me a lot, I have a better understanding now as to what I want to look for, Thanks.

As I’ve become older my eyesight has started to deteriorate and I’ve had to wear glasses for the last few years. I’ve also found that it’s much more difficult to read in low-light situations than when I was younger. So I can now appreciate why black text on a white background is so important as it addresses both issues (on a screen anyway). It always pays to stick to the KISS principle too (Keep It Simple Stupid)! 🙂

    Hi Gary,
Thank you for visiting us today, I really appreciate that.
Thank you also for saying that as we get older different parts of our bodies are not the same as they were in our 20’s. I too need to wear glasses at the moment to help with my vision. You are right, when it comes to choosing a theme and choosing color “Keep It Simple Stupid” really is the best.

Hello Glenys,
Great article on choosing a theme. You hit some great points here. My favorite is the one about navigation. This is so important to the UX -user experience. People need to be able to get where they need to be and fast – the world we live in and the ‘design’ for instant gratification. So, yes, as long as they can easily find their way around, they will indeed stay a little longer browsing your site. Much success to you.

    Hi Michelle,
Thank you for your kind words. Thank you also for visiting us today. I really appreciate that.
Thank you for talking about how important navigation is. I believe that when we do things, we really need to think about our audience and how we can help them. When we remember that what we do is about THEM more than it is about us, our website will grow in importance and success will follow.
