Another way that Google can help us get lots of traffic is by promoting our website through their free Google Alerts feature.

So what is Google alerts anyway?

Google Alerts is a free service where Google will send you an email when brand new content relating to topics that you have selected gets created and is indexed by Google.  So you sign up for Google Alerts and you select the criteria that you want information about AND you decide how often you would like these emails to be delivered.

This is a really powerful tool for receiving current competitor update and fresh content ideas that will really help your customers and help make your website an authority site in your chosen niche pretty quickly.

So how do you set up a Google Alert Account in the first place

It's fun and easy to set up Google Alerts for FREE

Step 1: is to get up a Gmail account to receive the updates from.

or just click this link to go to the Google Alerts home page

Step 2: is too type in topics or industry words that you are interested in.

Step 3: Read the subject lines of the email to get some great content ideas about what competitors are talking about in your space.

Some niches are so small that you might only receive a Google alert once or twice per week.

Some niches are so popular that you will be receiving alerts all the time and you will need to screen what you receive just to keep up with your daily tasks.

Please remember that if you are feeling overwhelmed you can change your settings at any time to make sure that you only get a quantity of alerts that are useful to you. No one likes the horrible feeling of being overwhelmed.

So to change your Google Alerts, just go to the dashboard and you can either select fewer topics to receive Google Alerts about or change the frequency of how often the emails come in. Some people prefer daily, some people prefer weekly.

Personally I only like to receive an email once per day. That way I can still manage all my other tasks that I need to do.

You can decide how many Google Alerts your receive

Step 4: You get to customize your alerts so that they are just PERFECT for you.

You get to decide…

  • You can decide how often you will receive new alerts = As it happens, At most once per day, or At most once per week.
  • You can decide the type of sources you can receive = Automatic (meaning a mix of all types of sources), News articles, Blogs, Web pages, Videos,…
  • You can decide in what language your alerts will be in.
  • You can decide what region or part of the world your alerts are coming from.
  • You can decide on how many alerts you receive, either “Only the best” or “All results”.
  • You can decide where to receive your alerts

When you are finished customizing your feeds,

Step 5: Just read any articles that you find interesting.

Hot Tip:  How to use Google Alerts to help offer value to your customers

Step 6: Now adapt these articles for your audience. Only you know the true wants / needs and goals of YOUR website visitors. You are the best judge of which parts of the Google Alert updates would be of interest to your readers, so take all the best bits of the article and then change them / adapt them / give them a real live working example and then create a blog post that your readers will enjoy reading.

This is really adding value to your audience. Now you are providing real live, current examples of things that are happening in your industry that can really help your clients and they get all this information delivered to them for free!

This is a great way to get your website visitors to bookmark your website and come back again and again.

  2. Thank you Glenys for this useful article. I have not set up Google alerts yet for my site. Definitely it will be worth try it and getting latest articles on the interested subject right at the box. Another thing getting your website incuded in Google News will definitely increase traffic visitors. But I have a question there will be lots of articles on the same topic. Is it still possible that Google News will include my article even there are same articles?

    1. HI Jesse,

Thank you for dropping by today, I really appreciate that.

I agree Google Alerts really will be a wonderful tool to help your business succeed.  I hope that you get accepted by Google Alerts and get TONS of visitors.

In relation to your question about getting lots of articles on the same topic, the thing to remember is Google Alerts has a screening process to eliminate too many articles on the same topic.

The screening rules are things like, you must have your own domain (so a SiteRubix domain is automatically out), anything on Facebook, Google Plus etc is automatically out.

They only forward on the first time you publish an article – so edits or “versions” of the same document get ruled out completely.

There are other criteria as well as listed above.  So the screening process is genuine….. but if you get accepted, then the rewards are AMAZING!

Good luck I hope that you get in.  If you are looking for other ways that Google can help you achieve your website goals, please click here Google WebMaster Tools For WordPress

  3. Honestly speaking, I never thought that there was an even remote chance of getting my site into the google alerts section.

One of the main reasons is that my site has been rejected 2 times by Google AdSense, and I feel that now looking at google alerts, it may reject me again.

But I guess, you never know until you try. You have given me a really user-friendly guide on how to achieve this feat.

I bookmarked your page, and will definitely refer to it this weekend.

    Thanks for all the help
    Regards
    Roopesh

    1. Hi Roopesh,

Thank you for stopping by our website today, I really appreciate that.

Thank you for also sharing your personal experience with Google AdSense. I have heard from other bloggers that it can be tricky to get accepted into that program.

Personally I applied just to see if I would be accepted, I got accepted – Yippee! lucky me I thought. But then I thought about my website visitors and the sort of information that I wanted to share with them. Then I looked at YouTube terms of service and realised that if I embedded any YouTube videos to help my audience, then I couldn’t have Google AdSense running on the same page/post.

Because of this I have chosen my audience needs and adding value and quality information to my readers and I have not activated Google AdSense and I have no plans to activate them at any stage in the foreseeable future.

I am glad that we have inspired you to ask the question.

I will keep my fingers crossed for you, please come back and let me know how you go.

  5. Hey, Glenys!
I’m so glad I came across this article.
I’ve used Google Alerts before to get informed about topics related to one of my first websites.
This now reminded me to set new topics for my newest site.
But much better than that is the information that they can be included in Google Alerts results. This is really valuable.
I believe my websites meet the criteria you mentioned to be approved by Google. I’ll give it a shot.
In case a website is not approved, do you think there would be any risk of harming its image toward Google?
    Thank you so much!

    1. Hi Eliane,
Thank you for dropping by today. I really appreciate you finding our website.
Thank you for your kind words – yes I agree that Google Alerts is a wonderful resource – I use it a minimal of once per week myself. I am glad that you use it personally to help you out with your websites as well.
I am happy to let you know that ALL website owners are free to submit their websites to see if they can get approval into Google Alerts. As a website owner I mean, why wouldn’t you right? The prospect of Google letting the world know all about your brand new wonderful information is amazing ….. AND ITS FREE so I think that everyone should ask the question and see how they go.
In case a website get rejected by Google… I like the famous quote from Brian Tracey, “Failure is feedback”. If you get rejected it may be because you are using a free sub-domain or because your website doesn’t have privacy information or cookie law required documents. If you know the reason why it is rejected then you can use the feedback and make your website much better for your visitors.
I will keep my fingers crossed that you get accepted Eliane. Please come back and let us know how you go.

Thank you also for your kind words, then help inspire me to achieve more.
Yes! Like you I use Google Alerts to keep an eye on industry trends and to keep an eye on competitors.
I have only now just figured out how to actually submit my website as part of this process.
If you have a website then, I hope that you submit your website and that you get accepted! I will keep my fingers crossed for you.

  7. I do have a Google Alerts set up and I wondered how these posts were sent to me. You have answered my question! I appreciate that.
I have a website that is doing fairly well even though I only post about once every 2 weeks. I am trying to find the time to do more. Do you know if that has a bearing on whether someone’s site is accepted into Google Alerts?

    1. Hi Cynthia,
Thank you for stopping by today, I really appreciate that.
I am glad that you are already using Google Alerts. Its a great way to get industry news and also find out about competitors at the exact same time! I am happy to hear that you have a website up and running. That is quite an achievement and you should celebrate that one. Lots of people have a goal to one day start a website – but you made that goal a reality – good on you for that. I like that you have a regular posting schedule. Even once every two weeks is enough to get some rhythum up and hopefully get more wesite visitors.
I am glad that you are excited about submitting an application to Google – good on you. We all need to ask the question right?
One post every 2 weeks is fine. The main criteria to use is 1) do you own your own domain name and 2) do you post original content.
You will ace it in I am sure.
I will keep my fingers crossed for you.

I always used the Google Alerts service and I always found it very helpful. Very often I get updates of interest and I enjoy reading the material it recommends to me.

I did not consider listing my own site within Google Alerts thought. I wanted to ask, is it for news sites only? Or can a general website also be admitted into the directory?
