How to Find An Affiliate Marketing Niche

One of the easiest things you can do to pick a niche is literally just grab a pen and paper and then write down all the things that you really enjoy doing.

What sport did you play as a child – was it basketball was it swimming?

  • Was it archery?
  • What food or drink do you enjoy?
  • Do you like to bake or BBQ?
  • Do you like wine?
  • Do you like smoothies?
  • Do you like coffee or tea?
  • Do you have kids?
  • What are the kids hobbies?
  • Do they like drones?
  • Do they like computer games (gaming)
  • Do they need help with their homework?
  • Do you want to get them involved in electronics and coding?

These are all really good questions.  You see the secret to finding a really great niche is to pick a topic or an interest that you really like to talk about.  Another great idea would be to think about a career that you used to do professionally that you are still happy to talk about.

You see because you already know a little bit about the topic and you are happy to talk about it, you really do have the seeds to make this niche really successful.

Do You Need To Brainstorm Ideas For Your Niche Website?

We all get stuck from time too time.  Don’t worry, the internet is full of ideas that can help you out.

A great idea is to go into a free Social Media program like Pinterest or Instagram and start pinning some ideas that you really like within your niche.

What if you want to pick a niche that you think is already saturated?

Some niches appear to be really, really saturated. If this is the niche that you have picked how do you get noticed in such a crowded marketplace?

This is a really great question to ask. The answer is to simply pick one sub-section of that niche and drill down on it and that becomes your GENUINE NICHE.

An example would be the niche of Basketball.  Basketball by itself is just far too broad.

To help you understand why, I typed in the word “Basketball” into my search engine and at the time of writing there were 16,900,000 results.  So for a single person with a single website to try and get cut through with all these website is just to hard.  You wouldn’t be able to do it.

Finding An Affiliate Marketing niche is great

Don’t worry, there if hope.

  • Basketball skills are a niche
  • Best Basketball balls are a niche
  • Basketball rings are a niche
  • Basketball shoes are a niche
  • Basketball training is a niche
  • Basketball training drills for small children is a niche
  • Basketball shoes are a niche
  • How to slam dunk in basketball is a niche

You need to just pick one aspect of the niche and you work non-stop to be #1 in that niche and that is how you will find an audience and become an authority in your particular niche.

Let’s Pick Another Niche.   How about Coffee?

So let’s take the topic coffee and see what is involved as a niche.

A great question to ask is What items do people in this niche need?

For example, if you niche is freshly ground coffee you will need

Finding an Affiliate MArketing Niche with coffee is easy when you know how.

  • Coffee mugs
  • Coffee machine (home)
  • Coffee grinder
  • Coffee beans
  • Coffee bean storage containers (room temperature)
  • Ground coffee bean storage (fridge)

And a whoooooole bunch of other products that I haven’t mentioned.

Number 1 Place To Go For Physical Product Research

One of the easiest things that you can do is to go to Amazon and take a look around to see if there are any physical products that match your niche.

The Three (3) Top Things To Think About Are

Find An Affilate Marketing niche is easy if you are prepared to make things happen

Make Things Happen, source Pixabay, Geralt

1) Niche

a. The topic or category that you want to be involved with

2) Niche Goal

a. The end result you are seeking

3) Projections

a. Have a guess to when you want the end result to happen

An example would be

“1st commission sale within 30 days” or “By writing an article a day for 30 days” or “By writing content 3 times a week for 4 weeks

All of these great goals that are specific to your niche that are looking to make something happen in the future.

The key with these goals is the DOING activity behind them.

Hot Tip With Goals

Finding an Affiliate marketing niche is like hititng the right target

Target, source Pixabay, 41330

You need to both think about what goal you would like to create PLUS what are you going to do to get that goal.

Lots of people say “I want to make my first sale”, but they are not very specific about HOW to go about it.

Sadly many times when/ this happens there a ZERO sales.

I know a great quote that says “A goal without a plan behind it is merely a wish”. Brian Tracy

Review Your Goals

Finding an affiliate marketing niche is easy if you know how

Review, source Pixabay, Free-Photos

When you review your goals try to keep things as simple as possible.

Simply break down your goal into easy chunks and then review it in a YES or NO fashion.

An example would be

Goal: “I will make my first affiliate marketing commission within 1 month”

Actual: I made my first commission on day 27

Result: YES the goal was achieved early

You should celebrate all successes. Internet marketing can be a lonely business when you are at home by yourself.

If you constantly challenge yourself and grow as a person, then you will be constantly moving forward and you will have a real sense of achievement.

Hot Tip: The Fastest Way To Create Great Content

Finding an Affiliate Marketing niche takes work

Marketing, source Pixabay, FirmBee

The fastest way to get through a task is to allow yourself 1 hour to do the task and when you are done, just put it away. Don’t think about anything else.

Top tips are:

If you need to research an article – only research the article for 1 hour. You are not writing the article, you are only researching the article.

Have a small break. Have a drink, go for a 5 minute walk.

Reset you focus and then move onto the next task

Then power through writing the article for 60 minutes. So this 60 minutes is exclusively about writing the article – content only. You are not researching it anymore.

Any extra thoughts or ideas or “shinny objects” that have popped into your head during that 60 minutes, just write them down on a piece of paper and then get back to them later.  Don’t waste your precious time on distractions.  Just focus on one task at a time and you will power through everything.

What Do You Do If Your Task Is Not Finished?

Finding an affiliate marketing niche means working to a schedule.

Out of time, source Pixabay, Geralt

This is a great question to ask.

If you only need another 5-10 minutes then you can grab those extra few minutes and finish the task.

If you need longer than that. When the timer goes after 60 minutes, take a break.

Book in a second time slot when you can attack it and go again.

Sometimes the best answer is tomorrow and sometime the best answer is to have a second go after you have had a break and stretch your legs.

Only you know what is best for you and what you should do to be successful with your online business.

Hot Tip From An Experience Blogger

Finding an Affiliate marketing niche is easy when you know how

Market, source Pixabay, Raggio5

Sometimes you need to really challenge yourself and push yourself and create more content.

Especially when your site is still new and you are still building it out, really push yourself to get 20 articles or more.

It is REALLY REALLY hard to sell products if you only have a handful of articles for people to read. You need to think of it as going to your local fruit and vegetable shop and there are almost no products to buy or worse still, the fruit that is there is all bruised and not very nice at all.

Extra Tip: Are You Spending Your Time on Productive Tasks?

Finding an Affiliate Marketing Niche is about time

Time, source Pixabay, Free-Photos

One of the fastest ways to earn money with affiliate marketing is to only spend your time on really productive tasks that help your customers.

Being really productive is the best way to describe this.  Being productive means “achieving or producing a significant amount or result”.

One of the best things you can do to remind yourself if you are being productive is to ask “Will this task that I am currently doing help my client?”

……if you answer yes, then you are probably being really productive. This is a great thing.

You Need To Master Lots Of Mini-Skill Categories In Affiliate Marketing

Internet marketing has a lot of “mini-skill categories” to master all at once. Things like……

  • learning how to embed images

  • Learning how to embed videos.

If you need to watch a short video on how to do this, please click here

  • How do I do PPC (Pay Per Click) campaigns?

If you need to watch a short video on how to do this, please click here

Phew… I know. Even I seriously underestimated the amount of different skillset areas that come along with internet marketing.

One of the best things you can do to keep yourself on track and focused is just to ask yourself the question “do I need some help in this area or can I figure it out myself?”

The internet is full of people who have gone before you and who want to help you success and will be willing to share free information with you.  I mean why waste your time mucking around with trial and error when you can just go to one place and get the answer that you need right?

  1. Making money through affiliate marketing has become very popular. And although there are a lot of success stories, there are also failures.

I find these tips and guidelines you have enumerated very helpful in starting out a niche and how to become a successful affiliate marketer.

I think what people struggle with the most is choosing a niche because you want to build your site on something that you’re not only passionate about but also that which has the potential to bring in some cash.

Finding the right affiliate marketing niche can be a great challenge but I believe that starting out right is very important. Goal-setting and projections will come easier once you have decided your niche.

    1. Hi Alice,

Thank you for sharing your knowledge and experience with us today. I really appreciate that.

You are right and have certainly spoken some words of wisdom.  I agree that choosing a niche can be a very hard task for many people.  Finding the right affiliate marketing niche can be a great challenge.  Goal-setting and projections will come easier once you have decided your niche.

  2. Glenys there is so much valuable information in this article. Starting with choosing the niche then honing in on it to the actual writing of the article and the research.
I really like two ideas you came up with.
    1. to limit to 1 hour writing or researching then go for a walk and clear your head.
2 . When distracted by shiny objects to make a note of them and continue with what you were doing and return to them later.
I gained a lot through reading this and will keep a link to it for further reference.
    Thank you for sharing.

    1. Hi Judy,

Thank you for stopping by, I really appreciate that.

Thank you also for your kind words, that will encourage me to write more content like this in the future.

I agree that choosing a niche can be a really difficult task for many people. Lots of people go really broad and think that a broad niche will give them lots of traffic opportunities. Sadly, the opposite is true. Many times if a topic is too broad it is far to competitive and it is so hard to get cut through that people miss out.  All the good traffic goes to other people.

This can leave people heartbroken that their dream of starting a business has failed.

If they had only opened up a genuine niche and aimed to be #1 in that niche and that topic only, then they would have been really successful.

ALL businesses need customers. In the internet landscape customers are called “traffic”, if you don’t have any website traffic, then you just don’t have a website business.

  3. I am actually interested in a lot of things but I am passionate about only a few things. So I will choose one of the things which I am passionate. However I want to choose one which has high potential. How can I determine it? Or should I just choose one and start?

    1. Hi Furkan,

Thank you for visiting our website today and for sharing some of your knowledge and experience with us. I really appreciate that.  you are right, when you first start out there are many topics that you are interested in or passionate about.  This can make it challenging for new people to understand where to spend their time.  We all want to send our time on a niche that has the potential to give us money right?

The best way to judge the potential of your niche is to ask  yourself do people buy good / services or information in this niche?  Or do advertisers pay for marketing / advertising in this niche.

These are two great questions to help you understand the direction of your website and the potential of your business to grow into a full time income.

  4. Thanks for writing this great post. I learnt a lot about how to find my niche. I had a website and I picked a topic, but now I realise that by going to broad I didn’t get ranked on page 1 of Google. This meant this I really didn’t get many website visitors. Thank you for helping me narrow down my niche a lot more.

  5. Hey there,

I have been having issues to narrowing down to a niche I feel I want to build my website on and I think all the problems ended when I came here.

Many people give out lists of niches they think are hot for affiliate marketers, but you walk people through The whole idea of niche finding down to the last step.

I loved every bit of the article, and I will come back again. Thanks a bunch. 🙂

    1. Hi Dave,

Thank you for stopping by today and for spending time on our site. I really appreciate that. Thank you also for sharing some of your personal experience with us.

Yes, I agree that a common problem for many new bloggers is picking an overall topic, and then stripping that back so that it is a genuine niche only.

I also had this problem when I first started out.  I was lucky enough to find a topic that was small enough so that you could only talk about it as a niche and not a whole industry.  I can appreciate how people who pick “weight loss” would struggle to get any cut through because it is simply too broad a topic.  One person on one computer typing away just won’t get the results of mega corporations with mega budgets.

A niche is ALWAYS going to be the way to go, there simply aren’t enough hours in the day to compete with big business with giant marketing budgets!! Don’t you agree?

  6. Great tips and wonderful article, Glenys.
You certainly took the time to ‘lay it on the table’ about finding your niche and garnering the information to ‘make it yours’. I know that making that ‘final’ decision on what qualifies as ‘your niche’ can be overwhelming, however, you made it ‘feel like a breeze’! If I did not know what my passion was, I would certainly have an idea by the time I got to the end of your article.
Thanks so much and continued success.

Thank you also for your kind words. They will inspire me to write more articles to help people find their affiliate marketing niche. It is actually harder than you would think.
I remember back to when I first started and I was a bit stuck with what to pick as my niche and how I should help people the most. I am happy that I have found something now.
I think that you are right and that new people can find it a bit overwhelming when time comes to make that Final decision.

  7. Hi Glenys, This is a really interesting read and good meat on finding your niche. I know when I began with Wealthy Affiliate just 5 months ago, I struggled a bit to find my niche. But I picked one and went for it…a few months later, I am actually getting sales! Because I am doing what the training says. The training is awesome, and so it the community of people who are willing to help, like you, with this great article. Thank you.

    1. HI Annie,
Thank you so much for stopping by today. I really appreciate that.
Thank you also for sharing some of your knowledge and experience with us today, that is wonderful.
I am really happy that you discovered Internet Marketing 5 short months ago. Look at you now…. woosh making sales and living the dream. Good on you for grabbing the bull by the horn and giving it all you can to make this a full time income for yourself and your family. Well done. I wish you every success. 8. Hi Glenys

I really wish this post had been around when I started Affiliate Marketing. Although I will be taking some of your tips with me as I am yet to make a sale and I have been blogging and getting traffic for a while. Distractions are my biggest issue – I have so much going on in my life that phone calls and people asking for help often interrupt me. I have a homeschooled child too who needs to be direct to stay on task or focussed in his online lessons!

I am a to-do-list girl and ensure that I always have a plan of what I want to achieve in a day. However, I was finding that was getting too awkward. Now what I have is a blog to-do-list, a family life to-do-list, and a must be done today to-do-list. Things that don’t need to be achieved today go on the continuous to-do-lists and get crossed off during the day if I have achieved the must-do’s. I’m finding this is keeping me more focused and I always have the lists next to me to add when a distraction or an idea occurs I can just add it to the appropriate to-do-list and follow it up. Do you find lists help?

    Regards
    Megan

    1. Hi Megan,
Thank you for coming today and for sharing some of your knowledge and experience with us. Thank you also for being so honest. You are right, it can be hard to find the “perfect niche”. The very first niche that I picked did not make that much money so I started website #2. Don’t worry that you have not made a sale yet. My first sale took around 6-8 weeks (I think?) and then I didn’t make another one for around 3 weeks. So sometimes it just takes time.
Gosh you are a busy lady between raising a child, homeschooling and trying to create an internet business, I can appreciate how hard it has been for you to keep on track. Well done for creating a method that works really well for you. You should be celebrating all that you have achieved so far. You really are juggling lots of different plates in the air!!
I really like you idea of “To Do List”. I have something simialr around Goals. Major goals, output goals and follow up goals. I find that it helps keep me on track and moving forward easily.

  9. Glenys,
Finding the correct niche for you can sometimes be the hardest part of affiliate marketing. I have been doing this for almost five years and most people will get too broad of a niche or pick something they think will bring in fast money. Both of these problems will result in a failure. You need to have a niche that you have a passion for so that you can write the hundreds of post it will take to make a full time income, not many people make a living writing under 100 post for a website.
What tools do you think would help the novice develop the best niche for them.
    John

    1. HI John,
Thank you for stopping by today and sharing your knowledge with us. You are right of course, picking a niche can sometimes be the hardest part of the whole process. I did not know that you had been doing this for 5 years now. Well done to you. Not everyone can last that wrong. You are right of course many people fail to make a full time living at Internet Marketing, but they have less than 100 posts and it’s really hard to get cut through and build momentum with only a few small posts.
The best tools that I can recommend for a new person to internet marketing are 1) build the site in WordPress. It is By FAR the most user friendly of all the internet programing platforms on the market. 2) Activate Site comments (or a similar plug in) so that website visitors can engage with you 3) use a SEO Keyword optimisation tool so that Google and other SERP’s can find you. It’s really tough when you are blogging all day without any website visitors. You have got to get found somehow!!

  10. Hey Glenys, great post on how to find a niche. I like how you break it down so we can get the juices flowing better.

Another great thing you point out is setting a goal for creating content within your niche… that mad me realize, hey, I need to do this!

How long have you been building your niche?

Looks like you spend a great deal of time on this, and I might add – you have done a tremendous job.

Appreciate the way you break down what an affiliate marketer has to do to become more successful too.

Thanks and all the best to you!

    1. Hi Dallas,

Thank you for stopping by today I really appreciate that. Thank you also for sharing some of your knowledge and experience with us. Together we all grow and learn faster.

Thank you for your comments on selecting your niche. I really appreciate that.

Thank you for the comment on Goal Setting. This is something that I am really ramping up lately. I have found on internet marketing it can be really easy to get bogged down with distractions and “shiny objects”.  I find that it is really good to strip it back to the basics and really focus on what you have to get done…. and then just GET IT DONE!

With internet marketing you don’t actually know which posts will be the “winners” or not, so you just have to keep going with content after content and get things moving quickly.

To answer your question I have been building this website out for around 6 months now.  I have lots more content to add and many more ideas to share with people.  I actually don’t know when I will be done (if ever, there is just soooo much to learn and share and grow!).

  11. I really enjoyed your article. You have covered a lot of things that we must do as internet marketers and you have given a lot of useful tips on how to go about getting these things done in an effective manner.

It can be lonely working by yourself at home. I find the community at Wealthy Affiliate and it’s resulting groups on social media to be very helpful I do not feel as alone as I thought that I would when I started out. The support and pay-it=forward attitude of everyone there has given me a lot of confidence in myself and in what i am doing.

I do have an issue in using a timer, though. When I use a timer, I tend to watch the clock which leads me to fret over whether or not I will get the task done in time. When I sit down to do a task I pay attention to my body and let it tell me when I have been sitting too long. As it turns out I can sit for around an hour before my lower back becomes stiff and I have to get up and take a break. When I sit back down, I move on to the next task and so on. I manage to get a lot done in this fashion.

Whether a person uses a timer or not, it is important not to let a task bog you down. It is also important to mix up the tasks you do and to get some exercise in, even if it is just a walk around the block or dancing to some music in your living room. If you are home alone, who cares if you aren’t graceful?

Thanks for such a great article. It was well thought out and researched!

Thank you also for sharing your personal experience using timers. Everyone is different and we need to try lots of different things until we find the one that is just right for us.
I really like your idea to listed to your physical body and then decide if it’s time to move on or not. I think I will try this one.
I do like your idea around not to let the task bog you down and to move around a lot and to remember to get some exercise in.

  12. Hi Glenys, great article, I bookmarked it to come back too. I am surprised at how much information there is on setting up the niche for a blog. I know I need to try to figure this out. I really enjoy the articles that Shawn writes, even though it is not drilled down to a specific category. Going forward hopefully we will find methods to make this work for us too and still capture the intention. I hope to learn more aobut this especially with reading your blogs and great tips Glenys 🙂 Thank you

  14. Great tips on how to find affiliate marketing niche and being productive.

If I were to start over today in Internet Marketing, I would certainly take more time evaluating my choices before deciding on a specific niche. My first niche was a big mistake and that cost me a few months worth of work.

Of course, I learned a lot while working on it so that when I started on the second one things were much easier. But still, if I could give an advice to someone who was starting today I would say “read this article, answer the questions at the top, and take your time deciding correctly”.

Thanks for such an informative post.

    1. Hi Eliane,

Thanks for stopping by today, I really appreciate that.
Thank you also for your kind words, that will inspire me to write more content that will help more people.
I agree with you that when I first started out in Internet Marketing the first niche that I chose was well…..”not the best choice”. I am very happy that I picked a niche and I got moving and I learnt a lot of technical skills and it got me the momentum that I need to create a website like this….. but in terms of money, no. It has not been as profitable as I would have hoped. It fact, although it does make me some $$ every month, it does not make me anywhere near the full time income that I was hoping for. So I had to move onto a different niche.
