Top 5 Questions To Ask
1) How do YOU earn YOUR commission?
This is DEFINITELY one of my top questions to ask.
As an affiliate marketer, you are NOT an employee and you only get paid if something specific happens. So what knowing what has to happen before I get paid is definitely right up there as one of my top questions to ask.
As an affiliate marketer the top 4 ways that you get paid are
1) Selling advertising on your website (for example Google Ad Words etc)
Of all of these four (4) methods, easily the easiest way to earn money is by selling advertising on your website. The market leaders in this space are Google Adsense and Bing Adwords.
2) Pay per click (PPC), for example when someone clicks your link and goes to a company’s website.
3) Pay per sale (PPS), for example you only get paid when an actual purchase is made.
Pay per sale is one of the most popular for everyone that does affiliate marketing. Here the website visitor must complete the transaction before you get paid a commission.
4) Pay per lead (PPL), for example the local real estate agent will pay you if you can get your website visitors to fill in a form and make some enquiries with them.
Q2) Does the affiliate program have quality products / services that are a great match for your niche?
One great way to offer value to your website visitors is by only recommending quality products and services to them. Don’t compromise your values by recommending inferior products JUST because you earn a commission if the person buys the product. Your credibility is worth far more than one or two sales.
Q3) What is the commission percentage?
As a pay per sale (PPS) affiliate marketer, you get paid a percentage of the sale, so make sure you know much percentage will actually be hitting your pocket. Affiliate marketing percentages can range from anything from 1% right through to 80%. So please be sure to ask how much % of the total sale will hit your pocket.
Different companies show these figures in different ways. An example is the EPAY Partner Network. They can offer up to 50% commission. This sounds great – but be warned. This commission is on EBAY fees only, it’s not on the total transaction price. Most payouts are between $0.10 – $2.00 so just be aware of how YOU get paid so there are no nasty surprises.
Q4) How do you get paid?
This is a great question to ask. I mean we all have to eat right?
Different affiliate programs have different qualifying criteria that you have to meet before they will pay you.
Things to look out for include:
- Minimum sales target before activating a payout – eg $100 minimum payout
- Minimum time lapses after a purchase before they will accept a purchase as being completed. The most common reason given for this is store returns based on faulty products. Some companies only start paying out after 30, 60, 90 or even 180 days. So please just be aware of this.
- Some programs only pay you via gift cards and never offer cash. If you need cash only programs, please keep looking around.
- Will they do international bank transfer / money orders. This is a great question for people who do not live in the country with products they are recommending.
Q5) Will the company give you extra help to make more sales?
When I sign up for a new affiliate program at the minimum I am expecting to see free marketing help. I want to see help like..
- Free banner ads
- free gifs
- free product descriptions
- free customer reviews
- free cookie (unique ID links)
- free dashboard with my referral data on it
If a program asks you to pay for ANY of these items – run away!! There are a Heaps of different affiliate programs out there in your niche, just pick another one to talk about instead.
As you can see, there are a range of different things to consider before deciding on the best affiliate program for bloggers.
The Top 7 Best Affiliate Programs For Bloggers
The second part of locking down the best affiliate programs for bloggers is to narrow down a list of companies that you want to work with.
Here are 10 programs that are really popular with bloggers. Maybe they will be a good fit for what you are looking for as well? Please let me know in the comments field below.
Share A sale
Share a sale has been around for a very, very long time.
They are a very well-known and trusted brand in this space.
They offer PPC, PPL & PPS programs. The minimum payout figure is $50.00 They have a HUGE market place and have a great reputation for being “user-friendly” with people just starting out in the blogging world.
CJ Affiliate or Commission Junction have been around for a very, very long time. They have a HUGE variety of products and brands to choose from. They are an external affiliate program provider. This means that they contact potential companies for you and see if they want to do business with affiliate marketers. All you have to do is figure out which companies are a good fit for your website visitors.
$50.00 is the payout minimum.
Amazon Affiliates Program
Amazon affiliates is one of the largest affiliate program in the world. They are really popular with new bloggers just starting out. In fact, they were one of the first companies I joined when I first started blogging as well. They have an AMAZING array of physical products and lots of digital products as well. This is great and means that you will find a product that will be a match for almost every niche imaginable.
The biggest negative I have with Amazon is that the payout cookie is only 24 hrs (1 day). This is super short and if your website visitor doesn’t buy anything immediately, then you should just consider it a “no-sale”.
On the positive side Amazon is really good at converting website visitors into paying customers and you will earn a commission for ANYTHING that the person purchases in that session – even if it’s not in your niche or any products that you have talked about anywhere on your website, so that part is actually pretty good.
Another GIANT in the online affiliate marketing space. They have been operating for many, many years. They are really user-friendly and welcoming to new bloggers. They have a great selection of brand name companies and brand name products for you to work with.
Two examples are Walmart affiliate program and Macey’s affiliate programs.
There is surely something here to help you out.
The negative is the minimum payout.
Shopify is also a very popular affiliate marketing program. This is especially true for people looking to open up an e commerce store.
If you refer someone to Shopify, you can earn up to 100% of the commission on the customers first two months of their paid subscription to Shopify (the bounty fee). This could be as much as $598 If you get a few of these commissions every month, it could be very lucrative indeed.
Negative is that only a certain type of website visitor is looking to start an e-commerce store. Sales per month will actually be quite low.

Something Exclusive To Your Niche
Some niches are SUPER general and mass market providers will be a great fit, other niches are so specific that only exclusive providers will be the best match for your niche and your website visitors.
An example is luxury items that are very exclusive. Only a few people will have access to the affiliate programs in the luxury space. I mean you just can’t buy a genuine Hermes scarf or a genuine Louis Vuitton bag anywhere right? If you are in the luxury niche you definitely will need to apply to the company directly.
Another example is if your niche is brand new, there just won’t be many providers in your country / territory yet so you will need to apply to them directly.
A third example is if your niche is very, very specific there will only be a few companies that have the exact products that you want to promote. An example would be in the photography space you might only want to promote sports cameras and not the whole product range. You will probably have to approach lots of specialist Go Pro / Sports Camera type companies so you can promote these product ranges only.
If you get rejected the first time you apply (don’t worry it happens to all of us), please see my article on Affiliate Marketing Companies: Top 10 Tips To Get Accepted.
The beauty of affiliate marketing is that you get to pick and choose what products / services you think will be the best match for your website visitors and which products will pay you the highest commission for the least amount of work.
